Essex Golf – The Faldo Wedge Competition

On Thursday 1st June 2023, Burnham on Crouch Golf Club hosted the 2023 Faldo Wedge competition with an encouraging entry of 33 teams of Juniors from around the County.

The standard of junior golf in the county continues to reflect well, with 50% of the field being single figure handicap, including two plus handicap golfers. The weather was set fair and remained warm and dry with a gentle sea breeze at times, which combined with a course in lovely condition, was perfect for the entire field of boys and girls.

The Faldo Wedge consists of morning and afternoon start times. Teams are made up of three juniors representing their Club, all three scores to count from 18 holes of stableford scoring. The early starters included teams from Burnham, Orsett and Thorpe Hall, who set the initial pace with scores of around 100pts.

A long wait was in store to determine the winners with the afternoon competitors set to mount their own challenge, with teams from slightly further afield taking to the course. Sure enough, challenges were mounted by the later starters. Wanstead and Langdon Hills returned some outstanding individual performances from Samuel Humberstone (45pts) and Laxman Dutt (40pts). Often the key to this event is not only consistency but a team member who really tears up the course!

So, Langdon Hills (Samuel Humberstone, Tyler Covey, Harry Tobin) with a commanding score of 107 points pushed through at the end of the afternoon, winning the Faldo Wedge by three points from Orsett B (Jason Sion, Aydin Malik, Alex Oddy), hosts Burnham in third with 100 and Wanstead fourth with 98.

They will now be representing Essex in the National Junior Club Championship later in the year at Woodhall Spa, we wish the team all the very best of luck for that event.

Lily Hawes from Chelmsford cruised to Individual honours with a fantastic 40pts to win the Best Score for the Girls and Samuel Humberstone with his 45pts the Boys Best Score.

The Essex Golf Union would like to thank all the Junior Organisers who contribute and sacrifice so much time for junior golf in the county and to Burnham on Crouch Golf Club for hosting the event and making everyone feel so welcome. Congratulations to all the junior golfers for their efforts but equally noteworthy; all were a credit to their Clubs.
