Norfolk Women Make It a Double
Captain Jill Gooch’s 10-strong Norfolk squad proved the perfect blend of youth and experience at the East Region Second Team Tournament held at Stowmarket Golf Club in Suffolk.
Teams from Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire & Huntingdonshire, Essex, Norfolk, and Suffolk competed over three days, with each match consisting of three singles and two foursomes.
Norfolk began with a strong 4–1 win over Cambs & Hunts, thanks to singles victories from Doris Thomas and Lilia Copeman, and foursomes wins by Booth & Reeve and Hutchinson & Blake.
Next up were old rivals Essex, always a close contest. Thomas narrowly lost on the 18th after a high-quality match filled with birdies and pars. Wins from Copeman and Booth set the tone, and the decisive point came from Anderson & Mann, who sealed the match on the 17th.
Day two began with an early start against hosts Suffolk. Norfolk’s singles lineup delivered across the board, followed by another point from Rutherford & Reeve, and a final win from Anderson & Mann, finishing again on the 17th for a second 4–1 victory.
Needing just one more win to take the trophy, Norfolk faced Bedfordshire in the final match. After a delayed start, Thomas stormed to a 7&5 victory, and Copeman followed with a 5&4 win. Though Booth narrowly lost on the 18th, Rutherford & Reeve won 3&2, and Hutchinson & Blake halved their match, securing a 3.5–1.5 win and the East Region title.
“This is a fantastic achievement for the Norfolk team,” said Captain Jill Gooch. “To win the trophy for the second time in three years, and with all matches played in such great spirits, was a joy to watch.”
