The Club say…

Founded in 1969, this was actually a facility for NHS patients and staff and is located on the grounds of the old Ipswich Borough Mental Health Hospital, with the building being designed by William Ribbans in the Italianesque style. Some of the buildings remain and are now luxury apartments as Belgrove Place with the remaining a modern housing development.

Despite several attempts to build on the golf course, it has survived and flourishes to this day, with nearly 300 members, two green keepers and several volunteers.

The Ipswich Star once described the course as a ‘hidden gem’. They were right, it’s a picturesque nine-hole layout in the heart of the Foxhall community. It is classed as a heathland course which means it is playable all year round as it is free draining. All the greens have been drainage drilled and are up there with some of the local Championship courses.

The course is a test for both new and established golfers with our signature hole the ‘Mickey Mouse’, a short par 4 of some 250 yds, with a wickedly sloping green which is well protected at the front by a deep bunker. Big hitters, eagle club yes, but you will take a par any day. You just have to play it.

So, are you new to the game and looking to learn? Maybe you want to swing a club for the first time? There might even be a good chance that you’re a little more experienced than that but want to brush up on your skills. Or perhaps Father Time has caught you up and are unable to complete 18 holes on a bigger course, in that case, the course at St Clements Golf Club is absolutely suited to you.

A lovely, testy, nine-hole, par-31 course; it’s a classic example of never judging a book by its cover.
